FLYING FOX WOMAN - an on-going study.
Flying Fox woman
Is a character I have explored through burlesque style performance, in paintings and photography.
She embodies the dark feminine, and symbolizes to me the emotions a "good woman" is not meant to feel, like anger, jealousy, violence and lust.
She is like a comic book character assuming the name of the local nocturnal 'pest' the flying fox as a humorous twist.
The most exciting thing that happened in this exploration of this entity Flying Fox woman, was I got pregnant.
Photographing myself in the guise of the character I could really explore the challenging themes of motherhood. I captured myself with my fishnet body stocking stretching over my bulging belly, the images I made brought to the fore issues of identity, loss of personal freedom both mentally and physically and the increasing demands of having to carry out the everyday chores of life rather than indulging in the high-life my subject yearned for.
This culminated in an exhibition at the Dolls House Gallery Preston Melbourne.

FOX IN A BOX
Fox in a Box is the tale of the facetious character Flying Fox Woman, an urban legend and home-made superhero suffering from domestication.
In an alienating urban landscape, Flying Fox Woman is coming to terms with the constraints of motherhood.
The images are lo-fi photomontages cut and pasted by hand and put together much like the hand-stitched garb of our protagonist.
The enclosed and minute confines of the Dolls House provides a fitting metaphor for the struggle with isolation.
Rebecca McIntosh’s darkly humorous body of work explores the dramatic quest for identity within the space of the mundane.
