The Store Room Salon Series: CULTIVATE
Produced by Store Room Theatre & FULL TILT at the Arts Centre.
Created by Rebecca McIntosh
Facilitated by Rebecca McIntosh
Producer Laura Milke.
The Salon series is a hark back to old bohemia - good food, good wine, good conversation between people who are passionate about the Arts.
I collaborated with Todd MacDonald (The Storeroom) and Leon Salom to develop this four-part pod cast series, which was recorded from August-2009 - February 2010.
Crucial conversation in the intimate surrounds of The Store Room theatre, the Salon was an exclusive dinner that focused on positive and proactive energies around the theme "Cultivate" and the metaphor of the four seasons.
In our facilitation of the conversation we used the metaphors to help over come the tendency for people to relate everything to personnel experience rather than viewing the bigger picture, which is often more effective when trying to tackle a problem.
Each salon was recorded and will be published on The Store Room Theatre and Arts Centre websites as a pod cast, available as a resource for all.
Bellow are the four Salons their general themes and metaphors

Bellow are the four Salons their general themes and metaphors
Salon 1 TURNING THE EARTH
WINTER Seeds - new ideas- initiation - gestation
Let's start while the branches are bare by turning the earth, digging in deep and finding out what is there, what are the issues that concern us as artist, producers and industry leaders let's churn it up! This is the starting point of the conversation and the issues raised here can then define the following Salon's. Each guest will be asked to bring an object that symbolizes the current state of Melbourne's cultural landscape. MENU Hearty and slow-cooked lamb. COLOUR Red. |
Salon 2 NURTURING THE NEW
|
SPRING Blossoms - making new ideas - the process of making work , birth.
The ideas have been seeded and their fresh new buds are beginning to blossom, how do new ideas get the opportunity to come to fruition, are there processes of working that are more successful then others, who and what are emerging, what do we need to do to nurture them. Nurturing the new can be like baking a cake there are certain ingredients that are crucial for success. We ask our guests to consider and bring to the table what they think are essential ingredients for bringing new ideas into bloom. MENU Tapas Bits and pieces that are small and delicious. COLOUR Green |
Salon 3 HARVESTING THE FRUIT
SUMMER Fruit - present ideas- product - harvest - Life.
Once this bounty has been reaped the goods still needs to be packaged, shipped to the market and then sold to the buyer Your organic boutique fruit shop outlet has been taken over by Coles, there's a glut in the market for bananas and that's your sole crop, you've had to overhaul your tractor. Using the above metaphor of harvesting the fruit as a basis for discussion describe 5 key aspect of a fruit harvesting process that represents your ideal way to bring work from the studio to the audience. MENU Argentinian BBQ COLOUR GREEN |
Salon 4 FERTILIZING THE FUTURE
AUTUMN Re-seeding, suitability- reconciliations- Death
Autumn can feel empty and bare, the fullness of summer is over our endeavours have either come to fruition or not, we now must turn again to face a new season and start the process of cultivation all over again. In regards to our work question it's sustainability can we keep the ideas flowing and our the culture growing? Using the metaphor......If Melbourne's cultural/theatre landscape was a single plant, what would it need to support it and encourage new growth? Please draw or bring in pictures of what you think is important for this "plant" to thrive! MENU Roast Duck COLOUR Orange |
